BBC web article all about me!

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Well ok not really.  But it does feature a picture of a character I designed and helped to build when I was freelancing at Muvizu.  Another robot.  Typecasting?

Incidentally, Muvizu is a very nifty surprisingly powerful 3d animation package that lets people create animations with stock characters.   Check it out.

Bob Fossil

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Here’s an ad for a new Samsung 3D tv that I worked on as a freelancer last year, building models, organising the extra texturing and animating camera moves.  I had no input on the jokes.  Just so we’re clear.

I was surprised to discover the voiceover guy turned out to be deranged comedy piledriver Rich Fulcher - AKA Bob Fossil from the Mighty Boosh.  Sweet.

Dear Jamie Hewlett

Please stop making everyone else with a pencil and a 3d package feel like a complete chump.

Thanks,

Alan

Damn thee, Motionographer

Friday, December 11th, 2009

So I discovered motionographer this week, an animation blog/showcase which is simultaneously incredibly inspiring and unbelievably humbling in a depressing, why-even-f*cking-bother kind of way.

Working my way through their archives now.  Here’s a couple of my faves… so far.

Animation showreel 2009

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

So, I’m no longer a student, and in search of a job, full time or freelance.  If you’re hiring or know someone who is please let me know!

Check out my showreel below.

The tune here is Evil Empire by the CherryKicks.  Check them out, they rawwwwk.

Early animation

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

Here’s an earlier animation I produced as a student project for the first year of my animation course, and is my first ever attempt at character animation.  I was still really learning a lot so the action’s a little stiff and robotic in places but it’s  not too shabby for a first try. I hope.

If you havn’t seen it, check out my final year piece, which is light years ahead of this.

Animation preproduction

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

Here’s some of my preproduction artwork for my final year animation project (see the final thing here)

Specifically here’s some preliminary character concept sketches and some storyboard pages.  I wouldn’t try to follow the story though - the panels aren’t in order…

Finished animation

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

Finally… FINALLY finished my MPhil animation project.  After a whole year dedicated to this I’m not sure what to do with my time.

It’s inspired by 1930’s American movie serials and features robots punching dinosaurs.  What else do you need to know?

Now… can anyone out there give me a job…?

Kreepy Kat animation

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

A wee Kreepy Kat animation to celebrate his 200th strip.  Check out his website at kreepykat.com

Why, yes, I have been watching the Life and Times of Tim recently.  Why do you ask?

Robot - rigged

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

I’ve been lazy about updating here because my animation project is sucking up all my time again.

I found the time to finish off and rig my robot character however, shown below. I’m still having trouble making his “eye” shine through his cockpit canopy (like the HUD image it’s supposed to be) without resorting to post-render composition, but life’s too damn short.

Really enjoyed layering up the textures on this guy to get the rusted weathered look.
