deadboydesigns.com update

I started this blog because I never update my website.  Now I’ve made all the effort pointless by  finally updating my website.

Come check out the Deadboy Designs gallery for some shiny new pics.

Lusi Sulfura cover process…

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Here’s a wee process thread for the cover of issue 2 of the Wasted comic anthology, which my Satanic antiheroine Lusi Sulfura appears in.

I had done a different cover previously, but issue 2 was delayed and in the meantime I decided the image I’d already done was godawful.  Here’s the original cover:

Luckily Alan Grant (the editor) and Frank Quitely (cover editor… subtle name drops) were nice enough to let me have another go.  Here’s the first sketch for the new cover, featuring a chubby-thighed, weird-legged Lusi:

And here’s the inked version with a lot of the proportions and naff bits fixed:

And here’s the cleaned up, photoshop-coloured image, without all the cover gubbins on it:

I’m working on the layout of the rest of the cover elements now, & will post up the finished article once it’s done.

Incidentally, the style of the flames in this pic were inspired by this pic by these guys, which I saw ages ago and kept as reference in case I ever needed awesome looking flames one day.  Nice.

Check out Lusi’s website. Also more pics of her at her myspace and on the Deadboy Designs gallery.

Sketches…

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

A selection of my latest sketch pages, just to fill up some space in the barren new blog.

I’ve been obsessing over an illustrator called Sam Mckenzie recently, which I think shows pretty heavily in some of these sketches.  I can pick out a lot of the same influences that I have in his work, but he has a Saturday Morning Cartoon zing to his stuff that I’ve been trying to play around with myself.

First post!

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Hi!  This is the first post in my blog.  And what better way to celebrate than with a Bride of Frankenstein picture?

The silhouette style of the Bride’s dress here was ripped off of a fantastic Bruce Timm illustration I found a while ago.   I’ve also been on a Mike Mignola binge recently, which is pretty obvious here as well.  If you don’t know Bruce Timm or Mike Mignola, you should.  Check them out now, for God’s sake.

I’m planning on talking a lot about my influences on things I post here - unfortunately this will destroy any illusions anyone has of my own creativity but I hope it makes people check out the artists I like.
