Sketch geeking

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Just another set of random sketches from over the weekend, which might turn into something later on… but probably not.

Two bits of uber-geeky fan art for you here.  I did the Spock sketch after the I saw the new Star Trek movie this weekend, which is superb - pretty much a perfect reboot.  I always loved the daft pop nonsense of the original series and hated the lumbering po-faced morality of all the later spinoffs.

The Buffy sketch is because Buffy kicks ass.  I was always under the impression that it was a shallow teenage geekfest until my good lady made me actually watch it, and now I’m one of those annoying pr*cks who won’t stop trying to tell everyone how amazing the writing is.

Frankensteinses

Monday, May 25th, 2009

Here’s the sketch I did last week inked up and finished, plus a mockup of the same pic as a tshirt design that will, more than likely, never make it into cloth.

I’ve got some weekend sketches to post up as well but haven’t had the time to photograph them yet.  Maybe tonight.

This week, I am mostly obsessing over the illustrator Jen Wang.  Again.  Check her out, she’s disgustingly good.  The Disney-toon style influences in her work really revolutionised my approach to faces and character a couple of years ago, and I love the cartoon snap and zing in her illustrations.

Weekend sketches

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

Just a couple of sketch pages I did over the weekend before I caught a dirty cold.  Oink oink.

I like the sketch of the Frankensteins - I’m hoping I can find the time to clean it up and colour it into a finished picture.

I’m binging on The Wire just now, which is just ridiculously good.  This scene is so good it felt like a religious experience.

All part of the Game, no doubt.

Logo concepts

Friday, May 15th, 2009

Here’s a few different logo concepts I’m working on just now for a chilli sauce company.  This is my first ever completely vector-based illustration of any significant complexity -  I think I’m finally starting to get my head round vector work.

By the way, does anyone know the right name for the cut n’ paste, beatnik style of  text in the second two images?  I use it a lot but I have no idea what it’s actually called.

Finished Wasted#2 cover

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Here’s the final Wasted issue 2 cover I promised a sneak peek at…

Remember to check out Lusi’s website for some Satanic slacker action.

Animation stills

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

In the vast gulfs between paid illustration work, I’m studying animation at the Glasgow Art School.

My final year consists entirely of producing a 3-minute animation.  Here’s a few early stills from my work-in-progress…

As you can see, I’ve opted for a subtle, philosphical piece, in which robots and fascist dinosaurs battle for posession of a Death Ray.  It’s, uh, symbolic.  Honest.

Weekend work

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Another experimental pic that started as a doodle this weekend, trying out some new techniques - in particular the cartoon-style vector block shading, which I’ve been meaning to try for years.  I’m really pleased with how it turned out but I think the vector stuff would have been a hell of a lot easier with a graphics tablet instead of a mouse.  Anyone want to buy me this? Or THIS?

Sam Mckenzie is still inspiring me a lot; you can see it here in my colouring.  Check out this great pic for a quick comparison.

Also, here’s the sketch page where this gal came from:

Kreepy Kat vs. the Ghostbusters…

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Here’s a sneaky preview of my feline anthichrist, Kreepy Kat, in his latest adventure outside of his normal 4-panel strip; this is page 1 of a 2-page Ghostbusters tribute appearing in the latest issue of the excellent Dangerous Ink magazine.  Go buy it NOW.

More Mignola… uh… madness

Friday, May 1st, 2009

This started as a doodle and turned into another experiment in channeling Mike Mignola. The base drawing is pretty weak but I was more concerned with the Mignola inking and colouring, which I’m quite happy with.

It’s incredibly difficult to copy Mignola and get away with it - first, because his style is so distinctive that it’s very hard to draw on without the finished piece looking like an out-and-out ripoff, and secondly because he’s just such a freakishly good artist.  You have to be really, really good to simplify things to the extent he does and not have it look like childish doodles.

I could geek about Mignola a lot more here but I’ll save that for another post.

It was good fun revisiting Kai - he’s a Conan ripoff I used to draw as a kid, obsessed with the Savage Sword of Conan comics.

Christ, I wasted my youth.
